I feel already conflicted as I sit to right this but being in the corners of the internet I am – I sometimes see a certain posture taken -where a influencer, blogger, Internet personality of any size or reach claims to be standing up for their up for their freedoms, faith, and culture by posting screeds about bizarre one off happenings, or news stories designed to divide and create conflict. And well I don’t think that this may be well intentioned I often think they’re spreading anger and fear and instead of quieting their hearts and finding peace in where God has them they create more strife than peace for other believers.
I am not a theologian, I am not studying Christian Moral Philosohy but I do know that standing against things you find an affront to your faith is an important trait of our Walk with the Lord – I think of Christian women who bravely came forth to support abolition, prohibition (it had its issues but they meant well) I think of Christian people who bravely attacked issues of culture in our country like addressing abortion by doing the work – donating, supporting, adopting and fostering. I think of people who cross divides to help and I am inspired. Justice and bravery are Christian values.
Then I think of “culture warriors” those who contribute mostly rage posts – about various social issues many of which are terribly exaggerated. They can range from seed oil, to popular culture like tv shows – mostly things they can avoid with eyes and money and can give less attention to and less fueling the fire but instead they chose to focus their minds, bodies and hearts on these issues. Do I think there are ways to tackle issues in culture thoughtfully and bravely as a Christian? Yes. We create – we build and we contribute to the solution I believe we’re called to!I think of work done by Loaves and Fishes Media who bring Christ to our screens and to believers and non believers alike with The Chosen, the people who create movies that depict God’s movement in real life and fictional stories, and those working to build viable alternatives to products and companies that don’t support their values as Christians.
But this post isn’t to stand in judgment of others who do feel convicted to share what they believe is right! I just feel I should share my heart on the matter to cultivate a more Christ like version of myself I find myself wanting to spend less time engaging in cultural arguments and contrived media headlines and more in the word, in community and do what I can in the places God has me, to reflect his kingdom.
Prayerfully,
Margaret
